Six Enjoyable Shows To Spend A Whole Lot Of Time With

Lauren Graham & Alexis Bleidel: The Gilmore Girls

While it’s not the November you might have planned, most of us have a lot more time at home on our hands these days – which makes it the perfect time to take care of those things you’ve always been putting off. You know, like bleeding the radiators. Or cleaning the oven.

Or plonking yourself down on the couch and tackling a show with a monster back catalogue that seemed just too much to take on. Well, nothing is too much anymore…

WIth that in mind, we’ve plucked out six of the best, brightest – and, importantly, largest – catalogues you’ll find. Whether you need to fill a day, a week, or the whole month, you won’t be short of something to watch with this lot.

LAW AND ORDER SVU

Seasons 1-20 available now on Prime Video

While we don’t normally delve into politics, we have to admit that New York City does seem to have a crime problem. Why? Well, because dedicated detectives who investigate vicious felonies have been at it for two full decades now, and still haven’t managed to sort it out. Setting a bar for police procedurals that’s rarely been met, and weighing in at over 450 episodes, it’s safe to say that diving into this one might mean you barely surface in time for Christmas!

THE GILMORE GIRLS

Seasons 1-7 (and the reboot!) available now on Netflix, Virgin TV 999

Lorelai and Rory had a run on our screens that lasted 153 episodes. Yes, there was enough dialogue to stretch across about double that number, but that’s neither here nor there. Whip-sharp and weirdly comforting, it’s a delicious way to spend a day or ten – whether you’ve seen it before or not! – and the fact that the show seems permanently trapped in a autumn snowglobe makes it perfect for this time of year; hot coffees at the ready!

VUELTA A ESPANA

Daily on Eurosport, Virgin TV 423

OK, if staying at home is getting you down, here’s a good life hack; watch a group of the most tired looking humans ever assembled pedalling for hour after endless hour. You’ll never be happier that you’re sat on the couch! Irish interests were off to a flyer too, with both Dan Martin and Sam Bennett claiming stage wins; what odds we might have something to shout about come the conclusion on November 8th?!

MASTERCHEF AUSTRALIA

Seasons 1-10 available now on Prime Video

If you’re in any way familiar with the global sensation that is Masterchef, you’d do well to know that the Down Under version is the best in the world – hands down. Everyone gets on, the judges are serious craic, and their native ingredients are genuinely amazing (anyone who calls a plant “pigface” gets a thumbs up from us). Each series has at least 60 episodes, which means that, just like Matt Preston you’ll develop a beard as you move through the years too! And if, like loads of people, you’re spending more time cooking these days, you’ll learn plenty along the way…

PEEP SHOW

Seasons 1-9 available now on All4

A ground-breaking approach, a set of characters for the ages, and some of the finest sitcom writing ever to hit the screen; there’s an awful lot going for this one! It’s also one of the longer-running comedies on this side of the Atlantic, serving up some 54 episodes for your viewing pleasure! Best of all, you can access them on All4 by hitting the On Demand button on your Virgin TV remote, but hurry – they’re gone come November 28th…

AMERICAN HORROR STORY

Seasons 1-8 available now on Netflix, Virgin TV 999

The alarming anthology is still going strong, but with eight seasons assembled on your beck and call, it’s an awesome option for some post-Halloween horror! The best part, of course, is the unusual structure; while they might sit under the same title, each batch has an entirely separate story, setting and style. A common thread, though, is that they’re all sensational, and more than a bit spooky – so try to mix in a tiny bit of comedy every now and then, in case you emerge in December a very different person!
