Six Movies You Must Make Time For During The Holidays

James Caan & Will Ferrell: Elf

Decking the halls, visiting relatives, and cooking enough food to feed a reasonably sized army; there’s rarely a shortage of things to do at this time of year! In fact, it’s all too easy to dive headlong into the madness of the season, only to wake up to find it’s early January, and the whole thing is done for another year.

So this year, do yourself a favour; grab your diary and mark out some ‘me time’ – or, if you’re so inclined, ‘us time’. Fill a glass with something to put a smile on your face, hit the couch, and enjoy some fabulous films – festive and otherwise – tailor-made to deliver a happy holiday!

ELF

Available to rent now on Virgin Movies from €3.99

Perhaps the greatest Christmas film of this millennium, Will Ferrell’s outing as Buddy the elf is the stuff of festive dreams! Charming, funny, and filled with the type of seasonal cheer that keeps you coming back year after year, it’s appointment viewing on an annual basis with very good reason – and the wealth of quotable lines will give you plenty to work with for the rest of the period!

A STAR IS BORN

Available to rent now on Virgin Movies from €3.99

A brilliantly beautiful and bittersweet telling of a classic tale, it’s hard to know what to single out when it comes to this one; Bradley Cooper’s deft direction, Lady Gaga’s scene-stealing performance, or a soundtrack that elevates the whole thing to the level of a pop-culture colossus. If rich drama is your idea of a good time, then this one’s a treat with your name on it...

ROALD DAHL’S THE WITCHES

Available to rent from Dec 28th on Virgin Movies from €5.99

Another age-old story given a thoroughly modern makeover, the children’s classic comes to life in staggering new ways, with Anne Hathaway’s delightfully devilish efforts as the Grand High Witch deservedly taking centre stage. Smart effects and suitably spine-tingling touches are used excellently, but it’s the still-perfect plot that makes this a hit for young and old!

FINDING THE WAY BACK

Available to rent now on Virgin Movies from €5.99

Both Affleck and director Gavin O'Connor previously combined on the white-knuckle thriller The Accountant – also available on Virgin Movies, from €3.99 – and while this is a distinctly different pace, it’s no less rewarding. Playing a basketball coach whose greatest challenges lie off the court, its central star is nothing short of magnetic; keep a few Kleenex handy too, because it could melt a heart of stone!

HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS

Available to rent now on Virgin Movies from €3.99

How exactly did the boy wizard become forever associated with Christmas? Er, magic?! Whatever the reason, a trip to Hogwarts has become as much a seasonal staple as scoffing choccies for breakfast – and it somehow never gets old! Mind, if you manage to clear enough time you can really go to town; the other seven movies are waiting on Virgin Movies too!

TENET

Available to rent from Jan 4th on Virgin Movies from €5.99

OK, so some people might argue this is going beyond the holidays – but if you need a pick-me-up after the first day back at work, look no further! Christopher Nolan’s barnstorming adventure is everything a blockbuster should be; epic in scale, stuffed with explosive action, and as bombastic a film experience as you’ve seen in years. A feast for the senses, it’s moviemaking at its most magnificent…
